The heartbeat of the city.

Grey’s Monument is seen by many as the centre of the city, a meeting point, a place for political rallies, buskers, and entertainers. In 1941 a bolt of lightning blasted Earl Grey’s head off at the neck, smashing it into pieces as it crashed to the ground.  In 1947, after the war, a new head was made by sculpter Roger Hedley.
